WebAIM CD-ROM Excerpts

9 november 2005

I was reading a couple of the excerpts from the Web AIM Guide to Web Accessibility CD ROM a couple of days ago and had a read of the "Skip Navigation links" article. I've read a few over the years, Jim Thatcher wrote a good one a while back. This one is really worth a read it clears up many misconceptions about skip navigation links. I especially agree with the conclusion that invisible gif skip nav links are pretty useless to motor impaired users who need these links even more than screen reader users. It nicely makes the point that if a document is structured correctly skip navigation links aren't needed for screen reader users as you can jump through all the headings by heading level even to get a picture of the document very quickly. That is of course if the document has been structured well.

I would imagine the CD ROM is well worth getting if you are an orginisation that needs to train developers in accessibility practices.
