The ALA Web Design Survey results

19 october 2007

The results of the ALA Web Design Survey are now up on the ALA site. the survey was the first attempt to get a picture of of the web design develpemnt communities working lives. The results are very interesting and not as weighted to US respondants as I had imagined they would have been. Seems to have been a good global participation. One of the results I found most shocking was the gender difference of respondants. The sex of 82% of respondants was male while only 16% of respondants were female. I found that quite surprising when I read it with so many high profile female web specialists out there, wonder why that figure was so low. Even more interesting was the figure for gender distribution by job title: for Creative/Art Director female was 14% compared to 85% male. This may back up a well percieved difficulty for female designers to move to the top positions in orginisations.

Also interesting are the salary dashboards, looks like accesibility and usability consultants earn more than say a developer.

The survey results are well worth a read even if you didn't take part, hopefully ALA will run it again next year. ALA should be commended for the survey, impossible to find information like this anywhere else. You can read the pdf of the survey here.
